What goals do you have toward becoming a nurse? In ninth grade I would focus on researching the field and maintaining good grades. I would also obtain a CNA license when you are able to and begin working in the health care field.

Hi Heaven,

I remember thinking the same way when I was in 9th grade too. It just made sense. I would definitely encourage you to study hard when it comes to science as your introduction classes and nursing classes will include it frequently. Having a basic understanding will help so much. Nursing is so great because there are so many different things you can do with your degree. However, I would also ask you to consider looking at other areas of work you may be interested in. I was so focused on Nursing that when I started my Freshman year of college, I found so many other interesting subjects I wanted to study. I switched from Nursing, to Emergency Medicine, to Business, and finally back to Nursing.

I got there in the long run, but I took a bunch of class I didn't need to, and ended up taking a bit longer to finish. I don't regret my decisions as the extra classes I took were great. It would have just been easier if I had known the options ahead of time and had thought more about what I wanted my life to look like.

As others have said, look into reasons why you want to be a nurse, become a CNA, maybe volunteer! Nursing is a great career and they are always going to need more nurses!

Good luck!

Hello Heaven,

Great question! I am currently in nursing school right now to get my BSN degree and become a registered nurse. For my nursing program, I had to take certain prerequisites before starting to program. Since that was the case I went ahead and obtain my Associated degree in Allied Health Science before applying to my nursing program. Before I knew I wanted to be a nurse, I was an EMT in the United States Army. I chose to become an EMT first so I could get a feel of what the medical profession was about. My suggestion to you is to start with small goals and work your way up. You can try to see if your local nursing homes, clinics, or hospitals offer volunteer options for nonmedical personnel. Some schools offer classes to obtain your CNA license before you graduate, you can look into this option if your school offers this. You can also see if you can go on a ride-along with your local paramedics if you want to go into that aspect of medicine. I hope this helps! Good luck!- Paula

Thanks for the question. First you need to set realistic goals that can be attained in a reasonable period of time. For example, if you want to be a nurse and in the medical field, I am assuming you are taking Biology and science classes. So a goal could be attaining an A in these science classes. I would also suggest speaking to your guidance counselor to obtain their suggestions on courses to take and if they can help you to start researching what steps you need to take post graduation to pursue this field. Good luck to you!
