There are a ton of art opportunities in the gaming industry depending on the kind of art you like to create. Game studios employee many talented artists in order to create new products. 2D and 3D artists are both pretty common to work with, and can get even more specialized from there. Some artists specialize in things like environments, props, particles and effects, characters, rigging and animation, and UI/UX, while others are generalists. Depending on the kind of art you like to make, you may be more interested in one specialty or another. But the mostly still revolve around creativity (and some amount of drawing skill). It's common to see tools like Photoshop, Maya, Blender, and 3D Max used in professional game work. Blender is a good free program for 3D modeling to get started with if you haven't already.
Thank you comment icon John covered this really well. Explore what style of art you prefer (storytelling, sketching, painting, digital painting) and what you enjoy creating (characters, environments, motion) etc. before worrying about what positions are available. Try out different programs, and see what interests you. The world of art in games is pretty unlimited. Melissa D

Studios love artist who can listen to designers and realize their vision. Depending on what type of art you are good at, whether it's 2D or 3D art, video game developers have useful talents for all. I definitely recommend being able to do both but if you can hone in on one that would be better. If you are good at hand drawing, there is even a role for you in concept art and help set a tone and setting for a game before it fully goes into production.

Once in a studio you'll be able to work with designers and programmers, and you'll be able to help them out in many ways. Whether that's helping design the UI or the HUD for a game, even helping make armor for a game. You'll use your artist skills, combine with listening to ideas the team has to help create their project. You can even submit your own ideas like what the hero should look like or even create designs for the bad guys.
