Hi,
I believe you can be certified to be a dental assistant through local programs. There are also offices who will hire on and train you as well.
Hope this helps. :)

You really don't need schooling to be a Dental Assistant.
Some dentist are looking for no experience but to make good money and learn the technology you need school. Plus you can go for expanded functions ( meaning) you can put all composite and amalgam fillings in for the dentist that will get you the furthest in the Dental field. If you go to Dental Assistant program you might as well just go for your EFTA. They didn't offer that class when I went to school 30 years ago. But you do have to be X-Ray Certified to make any $. I don't regret ever becoming an Oral Surgical Asst. I live for my job. I love waking up and going to work. I definitely love my job.

Tina’s answer is correct. In Tennessee you can do on site training and then sit for your exams or you can take courses at one of the local community colleges. Just be careful because those courses can be expensive and not provide hands on experience. It would be my recommendation to find a dentist looking for an assistant and ask if they would be willing to train you then you can get trained for free and only have the exam abs licensing fees.
