I feel like the people who have majored in marketing are people who really enjoy being around others and are very outgoing. These people are usually pretty persuasive and have a lot of creativity that the industry lets them use.
Alicia’s Answer
Hi Eric,
I majored in marketing for a few reasons:
1) I have always been a creative person and I was really interested in how businesses use creativity to grow their business and sell their products. My particular love for creativity was in advertising and how companies crafted their advertising messages and ideas. Though I didn't end up an advertising major, the idea behind the advertising messages is what got me interested in marketing.
2) I have always been fascinated by consumer behavior. Why do people purchase the things they do? What inspires people to purchase things in the way they purchase them? What things can be done to influence consumer purchase behaviors? Marketing is very much about knowing the consumer, how and why they buy things, and this fascination led me towards pursuing marketing (especially marketing research type classes).
3) I had multiple internships in college in different fields I was interested in: finance, marketing, sales. Ultimately, it was the marketing internship that made me the most excited to go to work each day.
I hope that helps provide some perspective, Eric!

While I didn't major in marketing, it was an industry that I knew I always wanted to pursue a career in. I loved the idea of being creative in my role and contributing to a company's success by utilizing it. What I love most about being in marketing is that your ideas get brought to life. Whether you're writing an email, creating content, or running an ad, you're able to pave the way for what it is that you'd like to do. It's always great to see the impact of campaigns you managed or were a part of.

Hey Eric,
I ended up working in marketing but I didn't major in it. Hopefully this will be helpful nonetheless.
I studied psychology, business, and statistics and ended up working in online advertising. I ended up working in marketing partially because it matched my skillset (yay job!) but also because it matched my interests. I see a lot of great products get developed, but then nobody buys them because they don't know about the products. There's a lot of new stuff coming out every day, and its hard to get noticed. I stay in the field because I like the social parts of marketing as well as the quiet analytical times. There's a wide range of opportunities in marketing, all the way from very social jobs like Public Relations to very quiet and mathematical jobs like marketing data analysis.
To help your exploration, I would make a list of the classes you love taking and even the ones you'd rather not take and post them up here. From that list, maybe us professionals can point out job tiles that would match your interests.
Good luck!

The reason I love to work in marketing is because marketing alone can help truly change a company for the better! Working on the vendor side and seeing the digital marketing strategies we recommend for our clients come to life and change the way they do business (increase their profits, allow them to hire more people, etc.) makes it such a unique and rewarding industry. And, there are so many different forms of marketing channels out there with unlimited content (think about all of the content on YouTube alone!) that users are now accessing across so many different devices (mobile, tablets, laptop, etc.) that the space is virtually unlimited with untapped potential. It is a really exciting time to work in marketing!

Like many others, I didn't start out in marketing, but found it was a great professional career fit for me. I tried out a lot of majors in college, but the one that clicked for me was journalism. I like the writing part (and it came easy to me), but I didn't have the kind of drive that made me want to get the hottest story, but I could write very persuasively. Took a PR course (marketing was all business back in the day - nothing for creatives) and headed down that road. But I ended up enjoying persuasive writing and fleshing out campaigns much better than handling crises. So here I am - finally finding what I want to be if I grow up.
If you want to go into marketing, try on a lot of hats in the field. There are so many roles you can play - when you find one that feels like it might fit, head in that direction!

Hi Eric,
I majored in communication studies/marketing because of the versatility that the degree has to offer...you really can do almost anything with a marketing degree. In addition, because the field is a combination of subjects like promotion, branding, communications, creative design, and advertising, it is a creative platform that allows you to work interactively with people and the community. I love marketing and find it very rewarding. Let me know if you have any other more specific questions about classes I took or my journey in the field of marketing.
Best,
Michele

I chose marketing because of my love for sales. Before a sale is made, a marketer needs to create interest for the buyer. The marketer would think of ways to create interest in the product/service and work on tactics to engage the prospect to make the purchase

I didn't major in marketing but ended up in the marketing/advertising/sales field :) I got here through internships and an entry level job at an ad agency out of college. I love being able to be creative on a daily basis. Since I'm on the vendor side, I also love working with my clients on their challenges and providing them creative solutions.
Hope this helps!
