What are some tips for building a resume that will stand out?
As an undergrad student with no work experience, what are some other sections that I can add to my resume to stand out? I want to show my employer that even though I've never had an official job, I have acquired skills that make me suitable for the position. #jobs #job #resume #working

A 1 page, well organized resume with clear text and uniform formatting is ideal. It is good to show things that showcase an increase in size and scope of responsibility between roles, progression in title changes, increases in things like budget amounts managed or size of portfolio, increase in team size, accounts managed, etc. Whatever is relevant to your field that you can showcase that way.

If you only have education, I'd put bullet points under your degree listing classes that are relevant and what you specifically learned in those classes that would be helpful. If you are a part of any student organizations or volunteer, I would also list those and put bullet points about skills, teamwork, and leadership that you showed in those positions.

Hi Shakuan! This is a great question! At a high level organize in sections what you want experience and skills you want to include in your resume. Then start putting it together. Given you mentioned you have no work experience, I would recommend doing some trainings online, either some google certifications or depending on your major, something more technical that may add value to your resume. Also, try joining a club to show leadership/membership experience. Google for other examples of resume and use these as a template. Likewise, I would highly recommend reaching out to your schools career center to review your resume. Good luck!

You have latched on to a very important point - it is critical to communicate your transferrable skills to a potential employer, even if they were not obtained through an official job. I would focus on any leadership roles you have held within your school and volunteer experiences. For example, a club treasurer has experience managing a budget, and a student programming officer has experience planning events. Any of these experiences can demonstrate a relevant skill and show your responsibility and commitment to an activity or organization. You can also highlight any college achievements on your resume - if your GPA is 3.5 or higher, any awards, participation in any team sports, etc. There are several online resources, such as https://www.thebalancecareers.com/student-resume-examples-and-templates-2063555 . Your school should also have a career center that can provide you feedback once you have a solid draft. Starting your career is a very exciting experience and wish you the best of luck!
