Congratulations on taking this important first step! My advice would be to focus on finding a job that will help you begin to build skills while also helping you understand what interests you - and perhaps what DOESN'T interest you. Start by thinking of your interests/passions and identifying potential jobs that might exist where you can incorporate your interests. The one key I would suggest in your first job - identify jobs that will include working with other people - whether that is co-workers or engaging with customers. While there are a lot of skills you will build throughout your career, the ability to work with others will ALWAYS be a skill in high-demand, so I'd encourage you to start building those capabilities early in your career!

It's great that you're looking to get a job! I agree with both answers above, and would say that you will learn something valuable regardless of what your first job is. Most people will change jobs and careers over their lifetime, so don't feel like your first job will box you in! You'll establish a work ethic, learn responsibility, collaborate within a team, among other things, that will all be helpful to you as you grow. Have a good attitude and you'll do great!

I worked in food service at an amusement park for my first job. The perks were awesome, but it was laborious work. I say, your first job should just be anything that teaches you customer service and work ethic. Maybe even cash handling is good, but not necessary. Your first job should be something that you can start getting your feet wet with the rewards of hard work and build a bit of income and savings for college.

Hi Kaleb!
That's great that you want to take responsibility and make your own money at your age! I see you're located in Utah, I don't know what the minimum age requirement is to work there, but in Florida it depends on the company-- some let 16 year old's work, others you have to be at least 17. My first job was at the mall at a retail store-- I had very basic tasks such as folding clothes, greeting customers, and helping make customers' outfits/style for them. Some of my friends' first jobs were in the restaurant industry-- where they would either be hosts and seat guests, or clean tables. Do some research on what interests you first-- for example... do you like sports? Maybe you could apply at your local YMCA to be apart of the action! The important thing is, wherever you go, to be yourself but be professional-- employers love reliable, kind, and coachable employees.
