Veterinary TECHNICIANS are often confused with Veterinary TECHNOLOGISTS. While these occupations share some of the same job responsibilities and they work under a veterinarian to test animals and diagnose illnesses and injuries, a veterinary technician requires less education. Depending on their state's requirements, veterinary technicians and veterinarian technologists must usually pass a credentialing exam, such as the Veterinary Technician National Examination (VTNE). However, veterinary technologists also need a 4-year bachelor's degree in veterinary technology. In contrast, a veterinary technician only needs a 2-year associate's degree in veterinary technology. This difference in education can allow veterinary technologists to pursue research-related work in laboratories. While veterinary technicians can also work in laboratories, many work in animal hospitals and clinics where they can interact more with owners of sick and injured pets.
VETERINARY TECHNICIANS • 2-year degree
Most veterinary technicians work in private animal clinics and are supervised by a licensed veterinarian. Technicians perform the majority of lab tests ordered by the vet. They deal directly with pet owners in delivering lab results and other information. They may show pet owners how to medicate their pets or feed and care for them properly. These positions require a 2-year community college degree. Some community colleges require that applicants have at least 16-20 hours of observation in a veterinary clinic or hospital in addition to a high school diploma before they enroll in an associate's degree program for a veterinary technician.
VETERINARY TECHNOLOGISTS • 4-year degree
Veterinary technologists need a 4-year bachelor's degree. Many technologists work directly for veterinarians or scientists. They can usually be found in animal laboratories running various tests. They keep patient animal records, prepare testing samples, and do a variety of research work. In addition to working at clinics and hospitals, veterinary technologists can work in research-related jobs that study fields including food safety, biomedicine and disaster preparedness. Those who work in laboratories must handle equipment and medical instruments dexterously. Vet technologists must also be very detail-oriented, especially when keeping accurate records of an animal's genealogy, weight and diet. Work hours can be long, and vet technologists can be expected to work evenings, weekends, and holidays.
