Marini’s Answer

You do not need a producer to get started. You can start by downloading beats (instrumentals) online and making songs over other rapper’s beats. You want to do your research to ensure you’re not violating any copyright laws. Platforms such as Instagram, Twitter and YouTube will allow you to put the music online for free to create a fan base. Once you develop a fan base, you may find producers who want to work with you or you can learn how to make your own beats. Then you can work towards copyrighting your music and releasing it on Sound Cloud, Apple Music, etc. Take advantage of the free platforms listed above to grow your followers. Make sure you’re interacting with your followers. Remember that this process may take some time. Do not give up. Keep going. Good luck!

Hi Thabiso!

You don't need a producer to be a rapper! You can easily find royalty-free beats online through a simple internet search. You can purchase download these and record yourself rapping over them. If you do enough research on the internet, you might even find some free instrumental beats that producers are willing to give away in exchange for crediting them as the producer. To be a rapper, you just need your voice and lyrics! Embrace writing and make sure you are writing down every idea that comes to mind. I have an ongoing note that I keep adding to anytime I think of a few lyrics or a catchy hook. I regularly refer back to this note as inspiration for new song lyrics.

If Rapchat is available in your country, I'd also recommend downloading this app. This is a community for rappers and freestylers to record and share their art directly on the app. It's a great tool for rappers just starting out.

Eventually, when the time comes to work more directly with a producer, I'd recommend networking on Instagram. There are thousands of producers on Instagram trying to promote their work and connect with artists to collaborate.

I hope this is helpful!

Search the internet for free hip hop instrumentals
Search the internet for royalty-free beats
Network with hip hop producers on Instagram
Dedicate a journal to just lyrics
