When you're a surgeon, how much free time do you have in order to prioritize your family?
A surgeon is one of the future careers that I have seriously considered and I want to know the answer to the question because family is the most important thing to me and I don't want to pursue a career where I have to put my most important thing in life on the back burner.

Surgeons are one of the least family friendly specialities available to doctors. But there is variability in schedule and free time based on what type of surgeon you become and where you work. Surgeons tend to work long hours and get called in to work at any time of day or night. Many surgeries can take 8+ hours to complete. Being a surgeon is a very complex job that has a lot of responsibility. You can certainly have a family, but you will have considerably less flexibility in scheduling and less “free time” than other jobs, even other specialities, will offer. If being a surgeon is your dream you can 100% become a surgeon and still have a family, it’s all about balance and finding what works for you. Surgery is also one of the hardest specialties to get accepted into residency for, so you will have to make yourself an exceptional applicant. That will require a lot of time, work, and dedication to doing well in medical school and participating in things that make you stand out like research, volunteering, and leadership roles.

Becoming a physician in general means you will be putting your personal life on the back burner, it's a sacrifice required to pass medical school as well as surviving residency.
