Erin’s Answer

Hi Bakkiyalakshmi, a great way to pursue a career in Journalism is by attending Journalism school - which would be a specialized major at most colleges and universities. Before you get to that point, it would be a good idea to explore if you like reporting by joining your school or town's paper. You can also start a blog on your own and write stories about things you encounter in the world. Interview people you know and tell their stories - this will help you build your voice and your writing capabilities. I would also encourage you to read lots of different news publications, listen to radio news and watch news programs online/ on tv so that you can identify what type of journalism most interests you! An important piece of being a journalist is being informed, so you'll want to build a habit of keeping up on the news . Being curious, a good writer, and having the ability to research and seek the truth are all important pieces of being a journalist. You can also join organizations like the Society for Professional Journalism when you're in school to build your network.

Tamara’s Answer

Bakkiyalakshmi,

To become a journalist in the United States you will need to pursue a degree in journalism first and foremost. Depending on what degree you pursue, you may have to work harder than others. I would suggest that you begin to write or maintain a blog site and make sure whatever you're writing is getting published or seen on a website. Social media is an excellent way to display and promote your writings. Once you have a degree to match your work and you can create a writers portfolio, you will be able to apply for any journalist position. It's also important to determine whether you just want to be a writer, a reporter, or one that has a mixed responsibility. Once you can decide that, we can discuss further. Good luck in the meantime!!
