How will aerospace engineering change in the future.

Aerospace engineering is a career that I deeply consider trying and I would like to know how this career could possibly change in the future specifically ten years from now. #engineering #career #aerospace #future

Aerospace engineering has always been about a few things: math, physics, and systems engineering. Those won't change, so make sure to be solid on that.


What will change is the tools used to solve math, physics and engineering problems. When I was in college, software to analyze fluid flow was only for PhDs. Now I work at a company that sells CFD software to working level engineers, and I can teach you how to use it well in 2 days. So if you want to work on airfoil shapes, keep up with the latest in CFD software. Also math programs like MathCAD or Mathematica. No one does hand calcs past the brainstorming stage anymore.


The industry is also changing. As government contracts get more insider, there are fewer and fewer big aerospace companies left to fill them. Now it is basically Lockheed, Boeing, and a few others that make military and space weapons for the government. Even NASA outsources all the actual design, usually. Everyone else has been bought up or gone belly up.


On the other side, there are small private companies like SpaceX that are trying to make a go of it without government money, which is honorable, but risky if the government programs feel threatened. So decide if you're okay working for one of the bureacratic big guys, one of the few elite little guys, or switching fields. I've done 2 out of those 3 in my career.


Aerospace engineering has always been a niche. A demanding but small niche. So figure out why you love the field (for me it was putting things into space) and if you're okay adapting or morphing 2-3 times to keep in the field, you will be okay.


Always be ready to adapt and get better at the new tools that the old timers are afraid to learn.

All kinds of engineering jobs have been on the rise for a while, including aerospace engineering. Plus, there are companies like SpaceX working on making space travel a reachable goal for normal people just like how the internet, phones, and electricity changed from being exclusive to being for everyone. If demand booms that much, aerospace engineering will be even more important.
