What are the biggest obstacles in being an artist?

Many people have told me that a life as an artist is hard due to many hardships/obstacles but nobody has specified as to what they were. I'm curious as to knowing what kinds of challenges I may face if I end up taking up this path. #art #career-path #artist #career-development #artistry

The first thing you have to do is determine what kind of artist you want to be...a painter, a commercial artist? each has it's own obstacles. If you want to be a painter then you will need to find someone that has faith in your abilities and will display you work, the same goes for any other medium you chose. If you want to be a commercial artist or illustrator you will need to get the schooling necessary, then find someone that needs an illustrator mostly that will be around big cities. You will find many people will try to discourage you from following your dream but if you don't try, you can't succeed.

Thank you comment icon Thank you! I am looking more int commercial art so this input you gave me about necessary schooling is very helpful! Thanks again Gabby
Thank you comment icon Really good response. I would also add that since you live in San Jose, check out the Academy of Art in San Francisco. My art teacher attended there for pursuing a illustrating career. William
Thank you comment icon Thank you! I am already considering and looking into that school and your suggestion helped boost my interest in it. Thanks! Gabby

Yes, good answer. I agree, you will have to choose an emphasis before deciding. That decision may also change as you're going to school - you may enjoy a different emphasis than what you started from after doing so many different types of projects. If you live in San Jose, I also recommend going to San Jose State's Animation/Illustration program. I went there and it's as rigorous as it gets! Super tough, but it will prepare you for a world in animation, games, or film.

oh, and if I were to be honest about obstacles, I would say: rejection, constant practice in your craft, inner turmoil in never feeling good enough, and heavy competition in the job market. The thing you have to realize is: you love doing art and it's the only thing you can imagine yourself doing. It's always going to be hard in the beginning, but if you persevere, have willpower, and work hard constantly at your craft - you can only succeed :)) Good luck!
