What career should you choose if you want to help poor people?

I'm Ms. Balint at the International Community School. My 2nd graders have a few questions and I'd like to share your advice with them. Thanks in advance!

Brittany’s Answer

I think all you need is a kind heart, it doesn't matter what career you choose because you can always help people who need it no matter what job you have. Imagine if everybody helped! One thing you can do is write a nice note and put some snacks in a sandwich bag and ask your parents to drop them off to a homeless shelter with you. Hand written notes go a long way!

Susy’s Answer

I agree with Brittany, you can help people no matter what job you choose. If you want to make that your profession, there are a lot of choices. You could be a social worker, run a non-profit organization that helps people, have a medical jobs, or even be some types of lawyers. Many schools have programs that focus on these types of jobs. You are off to a great start if you want to help people already!

Elva’s Answer

Agree with both Brittany and Susy. You can help people at any point in time. It does take a village to help others. From a career perspective and if you are thinking about a subject to select at University, I would recommend Social Work. It takes 4 years for the Bachelor Degree of Social Work, and then 1 more year to obtain the Masters degree of Social Work. There are many kinds of social work, so as you volunteer before University, you can consider the different types of work you’d want to do simply by volunteering for different no n profits and interviewing people in those professions. There are those that help the people find the resources they need to pay bills, help refugees to get started on this country, help people in other countries through non profit NGOs, help students who are struggling and may be of low income (school social workers ), and there are hospital social workers just to name a few. I hope this is helpful.
