How does someone decide to be a painter?
I'm Ms. Crosby at the International Community School. My 1st graders have a few questions and I'd like to share your advice with them. Thanks in advance!

Someone that decides to be a painter is most likely a person that loves to paint. That person loves to paint more than doing anything else. They would rather paint instead of hanging out out with their friends! The best job to have as an adult is one that you love!

Firstly, let me compliment you on your name. It shows a lot of creativity. ;)
I don't know if one wakes up on a given day and "decides" to be a painter. I think if you like painting it becomes who you are. Then you can decide if you want to pursue that as a profession or an avocation.

Hello Ms. Crosby,
Thank you for helping your students find the answers to their questions. This is a great one but it's also a very difficult one to answer.
Deciding to become anything is a difficult process that can take your whole life. I studied for and received my undergraduate degree in biology but later decided to become an artist. I have worked in the tech industry doing IT (information technology) work and now I create art for video games.
While I would say that I've always been interested in art, pursuing it as a career didn't always seem like a viable option. It takes a great deal of study and effort to become an artist. And even then the road may be difficult.
But don't let that discourage you. If you enjoy painting and creating art you should absolutely do it. Work hard at it and enjoy what you do. The only thing that you need to do to decide to be a painter is to paint. If you practice and keep making art then you are a painter!
