The typical path is to get a degree in Hospitality Administration. It is offered at many universities, with Cornell and NYU being the best. You could also get a business degree and work in hotels while in college- the best hospitality degree is not as important as a good degree + work experience.

I agree with Miriam's last sentence - having the work experience under your belt in addition to a degree is crucial. Research colleges/universities that offer either a hospitality administration or hotel and restaurant degree (check to see if there is an internship program or an on-campus hotel that students can work at to gain on-the-job experience). Start looking at different hotel chains - read their mission statement, get an understanding of their values and view their locations.
