Hi! I'm Ms. Lambert at the International Community School. My 4th graders have a few questions and I'd like to share your advice with them. Thanks in advance!

If you have a passion for fashion, you can start right now! Keep a sketch book or designs that you like, or outfits that you think of.

I think it’s Awesome how you are incorporating a different field to such a young crowd. However, there is no set age of being a fashion designer. Prior to COVID-19 I was recently invited to NYFW & upon visiting many of the shows located in different locations, Art Heart, a well renowned fashion event hosts designers of all ages but what stood out to me is that they host designers some even as young as 12-13 years old.
I believe that the fashion design can be of any age.jut as long as they progressively looking to either elevate, change, or diversify the industry as a whole. As I’ve worked with designers both amateur and professional these are all key points they seem to focus on. If you have any questions fill free to reach out.

I agree with Shamar - "if you have a passion for fashion, you can start right now."

I don't think anyone needs to be a certain age to become a designer. You could be 8, 18 or 55 years old; anything is possible. I'd consider you a fashion designer if you helped an adult make masks last year when the pandemic started or maybe you repurposed an old piece of clothing into a blanket - all those fun, craft projects are the initial steps in (maybe) becoming a designer.

In terms of schooling, many fashion institutes have two or four year programs. Some community colleges also offer sewing and pattern making classes as well; those are usually a semester or two long. I recommend listening to the "How I Built This" podcast; the host interviews many different entrepreneurs about how they got their start. The podcast has featured some big name apparel & footwear companies as well as big name food & beverage products.
