What kinds of careers could you potentially enter with an Economics/Accounting major? If you have a career in these industries, are you happy with what you do?

I would like to hear about these careers from a person in these careers themselves because it is more genuine and real, as opposed to a dictionary definition or a job description that you can Google online. #accounting #economics

Guilaine’s Answer

Hi,

I started working for an audit firm few years ago now after college (had some other accounting experiences during my studies and thought I should explore the different jobs). To be honest when I started I never thought I would be staying for more than 3 years, or I should say I did not know for how long I will be there. I have been changing positions along the way and every day is a new interesting and different day. I work with teams from around the world and I really like what I do. There are a lot of options with such an education, do not hesitate to explore and ask people about what they enjoy or not to see what fits best for you!

Good luck!

Michael Louis’s Answer

Hello Trisha,

Have you ever considered being a Business Analyst? There are a few different definitions for this career, but in my information technology (IT) world this is the definition:

An IT Business Analyst is the liaison between management and the engineering team. He/She analyzes the requirements for systems/business processes, documents them and insures delivery of the software/process.

Your economics & accounting knowledge will serve you well. You will need to talk to the business team in your Brooks Brothers suit in the morning and communicate with the software development team in your tee-shirt and workflow/UML diagrams in the evening!

I started as a financial analyst with a finance/economics/accounting degree. I quickly moved into independent computer programming and then moved into business analysis to make a greater (more far-reaching) impact on projects. I really enjoy the technology, business challenges and the diplomacy required to bring the teams into consensus...

Good Luck!

Simeon’s Answer

I work in one of the big four accounting firms. I myself am not an accountant, but I work closely with our accounting department. I analyze and test the IT systems that client's accounting records are held in. Working at one of the big four accounting firms: KPMG, EY, Deloitte, or PwC is one of the quickest ways to go up the ladder. However, the hours can be pretty long during busy season, so you have to be sure that it's worth it for you.

Rose’s Answer

I majored in Accounting and minored in Economics. I started as an Accountant in Financial Services, where I learned how to be an effective member of an organization. As a member of Corporate Finance, my accounting background is essential, but the economics background helps me understand business problems, identify the causes of variances, and forecast based on trends. I really enjoy financial analysis and decision support.

Pablo’s Answer

Hello Trisha,
This question brings a very broad answer, but to give you an idea, with Economics you can have access to many business administration positions, including strategy, even Financial Services and even more, working with public institutions or any Government body. You can also be specialized teacher in multiple high schools or even Universities. Not to mention being a researcher.
Accounting is a lot more specific, and allows you to be business manager, planner, tax advisor, CPA, Auditor or similar things.
In both cases, you can also run your own business.

Thank you
