I think you are thinking of something like bioinformatics. Also, there is the biomedical engineering field which combines medical knowledge with computing. Here, one can pursue things like simulating how blood flows through arteries. Often, one specializes in numerical analysis, which is often taught in computer science or mathematics departments. Sometimes these are taught in some engineering department. This is the field where one uses computers to solve mathematical equations that cannot be solved by hand.
