Courtney,

Both my son and daughter were band kids in High School, and explored careers encapsulating music in their careers. Here are some of the majors that they and their friends went into in College because of their love of music:

1. Music Performance
2. Music Business
3. Music Therapy (my daughter is majoring in this degree, as she wanted to incorporate her love of music with helping people. So she's doing Music Therapy and Psychology).
4. Music Education (this prepares you to teach music or become a Band Director).
5. Graphic Design (one of their friends really enjoyed art, and went into this major).

There will be more options available to you with or without going to college. Talk with your High School counselor, your peers, music and art school teachers, to help you figure out where you want to land.

Wishing you all the very best in figuring out your musical/art career!

Terry’s Answer

Hi Courtney,

Given your passions, I would suggest you find a career that makes money. This may sound like "duh" and obvious, but you would be surprised how many people think that artists and musicians make a living on their talent and get to travel the world. Most do not. Therefore, you should study general business so you understand the ins and outs of moneymaking whether you set up an Etsy store, teach music privately, or become a travel writer. Anyone pursuing the arts should assume they will be independent contractors for life so an understanding of business will be essential.

Another career suggestion would be teaching at a public school. Teaching at a private school or a college usually does not have the security that teaching in a public K-12 has with its teacher's union.

Make no mistake, as a fellow artist, writer, and world traveler, I love what I do, but I have made more money with my marketing degree than I have ever made with my MFA. I enjoy a life of uncertainty and would die in a "secure" job, but if you do not feel that way, enjoy your talents as hobbies and find a career that will give you the time you need to pursue them on the side.

Good luck!

T.

Hey there!

It seems like you are pretty passionate about music and if thats the case, there are so many career options for you. You can go into music performance, music composition, songwriting, music education, music therapy, and so much more. The other side of loving music is the entire music business which opens all kinds of opportunities for you explore what you want to do as a career. This includes music management, publishing, A&R and talent scouting, music arranging, or even tour managing! The opportunities are endless!

Since you also love to paint I think a good career could also be an art teacher! These are all things that you could either do by yourself or go to school for depending on how you wanted approach it!

Good luck!

Music teacher would be a great career! You can teach in a school or offer private lessons. On the side you can also do some gigs, traveling to open mics, music festivals, look for venues in your area looking for local talent to open or play for a crowd.
In music you can also become an engineer, audio, assisting. Engineer is the person that records and mixes the music. You can work for a studio or work for yourself taking projects from artists, mixing down and sending back, or make a work/studio of your own and record artists or yourself :)
