Hi Christopher!

I see Prashanth has given you some really good guidance on both career paths. So I'll focus on a different thing to consider.

I happen to be familiar with Locust Grove a little because I once lived in Lawrenceville, GA. What comes to my mind is a little of your long-term life goals. Do you want to stay in the Locust Grove area, or are you yearning to live somewhere else?

Based on what you have in mind, you might want to research what is in your area with regards to schools and work? I think you may want to give practical thought to what schools are in the Locust Grove area where you can get the opportunities Prashanth has referenced. You also may want to look at what employers are in the area where you want to live.

I believe considering those might help you decide between the two career path options.

Best of luck to you!

Edie recommends the following next steps:

Research schools that provide training in plumbing and wood-working in the area where you'd like to live.
Look at employers in your area and see what is more likely to provide opportunities for you.

Hi Christopher,

I hope you’re doing well & wish that you have a great week ahead, am sharing some information that I found online to your question

Woodworking
If you enjoy the woodworking part of design & technology, or even if you just like the idea of the smell of fresh sawdust every day, a job in woodwork can be fun and challenging.

What Woodworkers Do
Woodworkers manufacture a variety of products such as cabinets and furniture, using wood, veneers, and laminates.

Work Environment
Most woodworkers work in manufacturing plants. Although working conditions vary, some woodworkers may encounter machinery noise and wood dust.

How to Become a Woodworker
A high school diploma or equivalent is typically required to become a woodworker. Although some entry-level jobs can be learned in less than 1 year, becoming fully proficient generally takes several years of on-the-job training. The ability to use computer-controlled machinery is becoming increasingly important.

Find a woodwork course, or get paid to learn
There are two main ways to get into woodworking as a career – through a Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) course, or with an apprenticeship.

Your local college should offer a CITB course, which can cover different types of joinery.

Doing an apprenticeship is a great way to learn. You’ll be paid whilst getting experience in a proper workplace, as well as going to college part-time. When the apprenticeship finishes, there’s an opportunity for your employer to take you on full-time, though this is not guaranteed.

It’s worth looking at both options to find one that suits you – but it’s also useful to know about the types of woodwork you could be doing first. If you feel that a career in woodwork is appealing but you’re not sure which type of woodwork would suit you, doing a CITB course in carpentry or joinery will give you experience of lots of different woodwork tasks.

Plumbing

When it comes to choosing a trade to work in as a profession, it should come as no surprise that the plumbing trade remains a popular career choice. Unlike some professions that are economy driven, plumbers always have work because home and business owners always have plumbing needs.

Since the plumbing profession is highly competitive in the state of Georgia, planning your career path ahead of time is key.

The Steps to Becoming a Professional Plumber in Georgia:

Step #1: Receive your high school diploma or pass your GED. As a plumber, you will find that you need a good foundation in math, science, and in some cases, even some computer training as the equipment to detect leaks and blockages is increasingly becoming more sophisticated.

You may also find it beneficial to take some classes in drafting and blueprint reading if they are offered at your school as these could benefit you as well.

Step #2 (optional): Take vocational plumbing courses at an accredited trade school or technical college. While taking actual classes will give you a good foundation for your eventual job as a plumber, you don’t have to actually get a college degree if you want to become a professional plumber.

Instead, you can learn what you need to know by working as a plumber’s apprentice, but you also need to realize that these types of apprenticeships are sometimes highly competitive and taking the courses can really give you an edge.

Step #3: Obtain an apprenticeship with a licensed master plumber. Working your way to becoming a licensed master plumber is actually a three-tiered process. The first step toward getting your plumbing license is to work as an apprentice for a master plumber for a minimum of three years.

Once you obtain this position, you will register with the Georgia Office of Apprenticeship. This involves submitting an application fee and the documentation that states you are receiving your training from a licensed plumber. By doing this, you can “learn and earn” as you receive your extensive training.

Step #4: Become a journeyman plumber. After you have worked as an apprentice for three years, you are eligible to take the examination that will allow you to become licensed as a journeymen plumber.

Although you are still working under the direction of a master plumber, this license allows you to repair or maintain plumbing systems. When you have two years of experience working as a journeyman plumber, you may then take a state exam and apply for your license as a master plumber.

Hope this answers your query
Good Luck 😊
