Being a neonatal nurse is a great job, but you are correct in saying that it is serious. You’re caring for a very vulnerable, and often very sick, population that is completely reliant on you. However I’m not sure about the rest of your questions. Neonatal nurses don’t perform or really participate in operations. Some large hospitals with big pediatric programs have pediatric nurses that work in the OR but as a general rule that is not the role of a neonatal/pediatric nurse.
But there are still steps that you can take to ensure that you are providing excellent care. Being aware of the seriousness of your responsibility for caring for a life is a great awareness to have. It will make you think more about your actions and decisions. It is important to pay attention to details, little changes can make a big difference. Infection prevention protocols such as gowns, hand washing, and gloves are extremely important in maintaining health in all populations but especially the vulnerable neonates.
It takes a special person to be a neonatal nurse, I hope you love it!

Hello Daisy! Raquel is correct. Being a NICU nurse is a very serious job, but the OR is not part of our daily experiences. I will say that if you have a patient that needs a bedside ex lap, it is possible the OR will be brought to you. However, in these circumstances there are people to help you and certain protocols that your specific hospital will abide by. If you work at a delivery hospital it is also possible for you to become a DR nurse where you will help with tricky deliveries, possibly in an OR, but that is about as much time that you spend in the OR. Being a NICU nurse has many great elements, and it is definitely a rewarding job!
