Dr. James’s Answer

In the classical sense, a philosopher was someone who lived by a certain lifestyle, focusing on solving existential questions about the human condition, and not someone who talks about theories or comments on authors.
Philosophy as an answer to some, the goal of philosophy is a systematic view of the world. You are a philosopher when you can find a place for any fact, in heaven or on earth. Philosophers have indeed provided systematic theories of history, justice, the state, the natural world, knowledge, love, friendship: you name it.
A philosopher's job is to think clearly about fundamental issues and to communicate clearly those thoughts and the reasoning behind them.
The most important theme of modern philosophy is how people can gather and confirm knowledge through their own direct experiences and their own logic instead of automatically accepting established doctrines. Several well-known scholars have published extensive writings on the principles of this philosophy as they apply to different areas of life.

David’s Answer

Philosophers can help us to see and think in different ways. There are many types of philosophers. Some may write books or teach in high school or colleges. The study of philosophy may enrich your life. It can be a career as well but there's not as clear of a path to making a living at it as a more concrete course of study like law, accounting, medicine, etc. If it's your passion I would suggest thinking of creative ways to incorporate the study of philosophy into your life, whether as a career or a sideline.

We need more philosophers in our crazy world. More and more corporations are hiring experts in corporate ethics.
Hospitals hire ethicists to understand medical dilemmas. Universities offer a wide variety of philosophical classes. Perhaps the most philosophical careers are in the many religions that are the touchstones of philosophical thoughts. Good question.
