Julien’s Answer

Namaste Safa!

There are plenty of resources available on the Internet to improve your English skills! Here are some useful readings for you:
22 tips for learning a foreign language
Learning a language – 10 things you need to know

Also, some of the things that worked well for me are:
- Using Duolingo (they have a good mobile app)
- Listening to podcasts about the topics I am passionate about (photography, social media)
- Reading books in the language I'm studying to improve my vocabulary

But to be honest, the best way to learn a language is to practice it with other people!
At the beginning, it can be scary but the more you speak the easier it gets ;)

Hope you'll find this useful.

The best way to learn any language is to start using it often. Talk think and write in English. Another great thing you can do is watching English movies, serials and you tube videos. Follow Ted Ed talks...deeply observe how they pronounce each words and their style of talking. where do they stress. That will really polish your English to great extent.

Digvijay Singh’s Answer

For speaking english fluently i have formulated few activities which will help you improve the fluency keeping in mind that the grammar is fine.

1) read out loud: take an article from news paper or a book and read out loud. this trains the mind to perceive the language as a primary language.

2) think and speak: initially we run out of words for the reason we don't have the content to talk about a topic. So the best practice would be to let say go on a walk in the park and sit and describe the view with minimum 15-20 sentences. Initially the mind will translate the thoughts from the native language to english, with practice the mind starts thinking in English and that will help a lot in fluency.

you may always involve friends into this activities to make it more interesting and innovate it as per your comfort.
these steps help your mind to train itself so that the lag between thinking and translation gets cut down and it boosts your confidence when you do this activity in a group.

Prem’s Answer

Hi Safa

-Learn some useful sentence starters. Act as if you are fluent, even if you’re not. Use your hands.
-Fluency isn’t the same as accuracy. Hesitation, reformulation and non-standard grammar are part of everyday English, so relax – it’s normal!
-Engage with English everywhere-music, books, games, signs, t-shirt slogans – make notes & take it back to class, share, & collaborate!
-Students need to feel safe to make mistakes & realize errors are wonderful learning opportunities and not something to be avoided.
-Be patient, make many mistakes, speaking every day for fifteen minutes is better than once or twice a week, use your ear and your brain.

Good Luck!

English is not a very difficult language to speak, as most people believe. While learning to speak English, most of the people tend to make some common mistakes. People believe that writing and speaking are same things, but they are not, both, writing and speaking, require a different set of strategies. I have met many people who are very good writers, but not good speakers and vice versa. I have also seen many people who believe that a strong grammatical understanding is required to speak English fluently, but, I have many English friends who do not know the grammatical intricacies.
So what are the important tips and techniques that we are supposed to follow in order to become a fluent English speaker? Let's take a look.
Listening: To become a better speaker you have to become a good listener. Try to watch English news channel, English movies, English TV series like Game of Thrones, Friend, Prison Break or something like that. While watching keep your mind active and put focus on how a particular word is pronounced. It will also help you in building a good vocabulary.
Speaking: This is most crucial part of the whole process. Try to speak as much as possible. Practice makes men perfect More you practice the better you get. Try to speak with your friends, your teachers and at every possible place. You can also practice in front of a mirror.
Reading: Many people ignore this part considering is irrelevant. Reading helps in thinking and give some food for your thoughts. The most important contribution of reading is a strong vocabulary. You can read the newspaper, Magazine, Novels etc. If you are a beginner, try to read a light novel lets say of Chetan Bhagat. While reading make a list of words that are new to you and try to revise them again and again.
Writing: Many surveys have been conducted to understand how a mind works and what is the fastest way to learn a language. Results show that to enhance learning pace we must use our four senses. Three of them are already mentioned and the writing is the fourth one.

Poornima’s Answer

Hi Safa,

You can become fluent with any language by doing the following:
1. Listen
2. Read
3.Speak

1. Listen to something you like, in English. It can be anything... stories, speeches or daily news. Make it a habit to listen and understand everyday.
2. Read English newspapers, magazines, etc... and try to understand the meaning of what you read. Keep a dictionary handy.
3. Speak. Start with simple sentences. There is no need to use complicated words. There is no need to feel shy. There is no need to feel embarrassed if you make a mistake. Be a good learner and make an honest effort to improve your sentences everyday.

Good luck!

Sugender’s Answer

First of all we should digest English is just a Language, not knowledge. Any language fluency will be increased by practicing and communication.
Grammar is basic need but do not focus on too much on that. Grammar automatically enrich while communicating with others.
Best way is read articles and news papers in english, communicate in english regularly, watch english movies etc. More over start practicing "think in english". commit mistakes and correct them and do not repeat them.
All the best

Bellishree’s Answer

Learning a language is never easy. You can always make learning fun hence making it an easy task.
- Start by watching movies or series of interests.
- Make a habit of reading at least one full article in the Newspaper(The Hindu) or e-news, and understand it completely. Refer to the Dictionary if you cannot get the meaning of any word and try not to assume the meaning of the words when reading.
- Speaking a language is like any other motor skill, like swimming or driving a car. I can give you a book about swimming and then you can get full marks on a written test on swimming, but if I throw you in the deep end of the pool, chances are you will probably drown. Same with learning English. You can watch all the movies you want, listen to all the songs you want and read all the books you want. These are passive methods of learning. It will not assure you of speaking the language fluently and confidently.
- Begin by talking to yourself in English. Most of us have a voice giving running commentary inside our heads. Make that voice speak in English for as much as you can. You will notice that in a few days that you will begin to think in English. This will increase your speed and fluency while speaking.

Gloria’s Answer

Hi,

I see that you have gotten a lot of recommendations. Classes are a great idea. I would recommend interacting with English as much as possible on your own. Read books in English out loud, watch English TV, listen to English songs. Try to figure out what you do not understand and look it up in a dictionary. I would also practice with English speaking friends. Your goal there would be to ask for feedback on your English usage. I speak Spanish as well as English. There are key differences between the languages around the placement of an adjective and a verb. For example, "pretty house" in English, would be "house pretty" in Spanish. If I did a literal translation to English, it would be confusing to the other English speaker.
