How can I get work my way up to my career?

As a college student, I'm worried about the future like many others. As a communications major, how can I get intermediate level jobs when I only work minimum pay jobs at the present moment? #career #job

Dr Daryna’s Answer

Hi Tiffanie,
I agree with the previous advice here and would definitely suggest getting involved with relevant groups and communities. I would also advice to start building your portfolio - you can find a passion project and use it to implement your creative vision. You can use tools like Canva or even your social media accounts to present examples of your work. If you haven't done that yet, create and fill out a LinkedIn profile with detailed experience and insights into some of the projects you have been involved in. You can also use the "Open to..." feature to highlight that you are open to apply for intermediate level jobs.
Hope this helps!
Best,
Daryna

Dr Daryna recommends the following next steps:

Create a portfolio featuring examples of your work
Join and participate in relevant communities and groups
Create and fill out your LinkedIn profile
Join professional groups on LinkedIn (i.e., Women in Communications and Technology)

Jane’s Answer

Hi Tiffanie, I'd suggest that you get involved in groups at school/university where you can perhaps take a lead role and gain some experience even within a student body for instance. This is a great way to get visibility on some of the challenges you'd face within the corporate environment in the future.

If you have the opportunity to also apply and work as an Intern in your chosen professional either during the summer months or during your study as well, that is the ideal scenario - it's a stepping stone to a position in the same or similar company when you graduate and brings you relevant experience within your chosen sector.

Wishing you all the best in finding a relevant position.
Jane.
