What personality do you need to be a police officer

I want to become a police officer but know on thinks I can. My personality type is ESJT. #criminal-justice

Thank you comment icon I believe that there is no set personality one needs as long as you are a humble person! Rohit
Thank you comment icon I think you need to be impartial and kind. Do it to help others not for publicity :) Sophia
Thank you comment icon My personality matches yours and I worked in public service. Very gratifying, but also very heartbreaking. The USA legal system doesn't work for all, so if your intention is to go in and serve ALL and make the world a better place, go for it with a high level of empathy. I also suggest reading the book: 'The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Healing of Trauma' by Bessel van der Kolk, M.D. to see what scenarios are traumatizing for police officers as well as other people who have been negatively impacted by negative experiences with police officers. I would use it as a guide to avoid falling into those scenarios. Anna

Yanely’s Answer

Hello Brooklynn,
I think your personality should be true and what makes you who you are. Don't necessarily change your personality. Instead, build on it! For example, a police officer has to be assertive when needed, so you could work on your communication skills to make sure when you speak, you are taken seriously. A police officer is someone who will work to keep the community safe for everyone. This should be your goal too!
I believe it is all about staying true to yourself and working hard to develop the important skills and abilities a police officer needs to have.
Believe in yourself that you can become a police officer, work hard in school, expose yourself to opportunities to learn more about a career as a police officer, and that should help you along the way.

Good luck with your future career goals and never give up.

Officer Jody E. Beyer (Ret.)’s Answer

As a sworn police officer for close to 15 years, I can definitely confirm that authentic empathy and kindess are the best traits to possess as law enforcement officer. I have been able to get more compliance and dialogue from defendants and citizens with these two traits than anything else. Community policing and crisis intervention are truly what citizens need and deserve in order to improve the state of policing. As the political climate continues to place a microscope on law enforcement and the need for transparency, recruitment efforts are placing greater emphasis on individuals that display a true passion for helping those in need. Educating yourself within human behaviors, mental health topics, as well as being informed about community resources will aid you within your ability to be an effective and respected law enforcement officer.

Krystle’s Answer

Hi Brooklynn,

When I think of a Police Officer, I think of someone who is kind and willing to help those in need. Kids often look up to Police Officers and the community sees them interacting with kids and other members of the community. When I think of a Police Officer, these are the things that come to mind and make a GREAT Police Officer for the community they are in. Being comfortable talking to people and able to communicate with them will help to.

Good Luck!
