You do it gracefully. When you resign gracefully, you achieve several things:
1 You maintain goodwill with your employer, which can help you get a positive reference and perhaps work with them again in the future.
2 You can have time to resolve work and train coworkers to perform your duties when you leave.
3 You demonstrate to your new employer that you care enough to resign respectfully and will likely encourage them to show you the same grace.
To resign gracefully, follow these steps:
* Notify your supervisor.
* Submit your resignation letter, if required.
* Work through your notice period.
* Return any company property.
* Take personal items home.
Most companies have an exit interview where they ask you for feedback about your job, your boss and the company as to what was good and what was bad and how to improve it. Don't take this opportunity to bad mouth your boss even if he was a very bad man nor the company even if it was a horrible place to work. You ever know if you will run into them at another company in the future nor who their friends are at another company. Just play nice and say everything wonderful and it was wonderful experience working for them and leave on good terms.

If your decision is set, the first is to talk to your boss, tell them that you have an urgent subject to talk about. That will prevent them to schedule some time to talk to you by the end of the day, and you want them to know about it as soon as possible. That way they can take actions and make decisions having in mind that you´re are leaving.
The worst thing you can do is going directly to HR and getting the people you work with being caught off guard with the news.
After that, your boss will likely handle everything else, the bureaucracy involved, what actions you need to do before leaving etc...

You should start by stating that your experience with your current position was great; however, another opportunity came up which you could not refuse. Then you would transition to say that you hope to keep in contact with all the people you have worked with and come to visit from time to time.
