Monica’s Answer

  1. Understand the Role - There are a lot of job descriptions that do not necessarily break down the percentages of what your day to day may be. For example, strategy may be 10% part of the role, but 90% of the role may be quality assurance.

  2. Choose the right industry - The same/similar roles exist in each industry plus or minus some specialties. Find the industry that excites you and pursue a broad range of companies from starts ups, boutiques to Fortune companies. Be passionate about representing the company or industry you work in.

  3. Network with current employees - This is extremely important. Understand who your coworkers and team members may potentially be. Factors to consider are management and communication styles. Also, as you seek to grow and challenge yourself in that role you'll want to be able to match yourself or potentially see a mentor-mentee relationship with the current employees.

Margaret’s Answer

I fully agree with Monica's answer. It is so important to understand your role. You may not know everything about it, but the willingness to learn is key. I learn something new every day with my role. Also, make sure you feel comfortable with the role. For example, if you don't like math, then a math teaching position would not be the best fit for you. Don't be afraid to try something new, but know your strengths.
