In my experience as a tutor, in order to teach math most effectively to a student, you need to be good at identifying exactly where a student may be confused. Once you're able to diagnose what is unclear, you can try different perspectives of explaining the concept. Some students are more visual, some are more formula-oriented, so it's no wonder teaching can be so hard! I also think that starting from a simple concept and slowly adding more advanced concepts on top of that is also effective, making sure that each step is understood.

One of the best ways to get better at math as well as teaching is to practice teaching students who are younger than yourself. You'll reinforce your own math skills while also learning how to teach effectively. It's easy to forget that we each have learning styles and preferences, so a lot of teaching skills involve learning how others' learning styles differ from our own.
