What are the differences between being a regular pediatrician and being a pediatric surgeon? The salary, what a regular day would look like for each profession, and what type of medical training you would need and how long that would take.

I'm considering going into one of these careers and I'm just wondering which one I would prefer #doctor #medicine #pediatrician #doctorate-degree #hospitals #financial-planning

Sarah’s Answer

You should probably get the answer from actual doctors- but a pediatrician usually has actual office hours from 9-5 or close to that, whereas pediatric surgeons can be on call and need to run in at all hours. Sometimes the pediatrician will be on call to answer questions over the phone, but generally the actual work happens during very consistent times. Both have to work extremely hard all throughout medical school to be successful. The surgeon may have to do even more schooling but I'm not sure.

DAILY LIFE FOR A SURGEON
Clinic: Evaluate patients prior to surgery. Explain the options including alternative to surgery. Follow up with patients after surgery looking for possible complications.
OR: Perform the surgery with a team including scrub techs, nurses and anesthesiologists.
Rounds: Evaluate patients who are admitted to the hospital before and after surgery.
ER: take calls from ER doctors who are consulting for possible surgical admission.

Generally, Pediatricians work in an outpatient setting. They perform physical exams, order tests including laboratory and imaging tests, make diagnoses, and prescribe treatments to children or refer to specialists. They also perform well-child exams and provide vaccinations. Some pediatricians work in a hospital setting, taking care of sick children, for example in the Intensive Care Unit.
