Lauren Flynn’s Answer

Hi Azra,

Many colleges offer work study programs that find college students work on campus. I was very lucky to work a few different jobs on my college campus as a tutor, and a computer lab monitor. I had friends who made money by working jobs on campus as aerobics instructors, administrative assistants to leaders at the school, and athletic referees for intramural sports. Other classmates worked in the dining hall, or at Starbucks on campus. I was also able to find a job as a breakfast server at a restaurant not too far from school to get extra cash on the weekends. I wish you the best of luck in finding a good job on campus, or just off campus.

Meanwhile, it is important for your future career to keep your grades up and also to participate in various clubs or enrichment opportunities in which you are passionate and really enjoy.

Finally, I encourage you to seek out internships early in college. My little sister was able to work with NBC at the Olympics her freshman year - and this gave her many job prospects the following years. Internships will set you up for future success in a career. (So talk to your career center early in your college career!)

Good luck!

Thank you comment icon Hi Lauren. Thank you for this response, as it gave me the information i needed to know about the work study programs. I will probably look right into internships when im in college but will also worry about the school work that needs to be done too. I didnt know about the jobs on campus and this gave me a good insight to what to expect when looking for a job. Thank you again! Azra
Thank you comment icon Best of luck! And definitely find something athletic that you enjoy (or where you can work on homework). Lauren Flynn Craft

Thank you comment icon Work study Programs do indeed make things much easier, however, individuals must use work study wisely, in my opinion. Dominique

Vanja’s Answer

Hello Azra!

I just wanted to also bring your attention to possibly applying for scholarships and bursaries.
It is always worth a try!
You would be amazed to find out the variety of scholarships/bursaries that exist.
Just to give you an idea, you can be awarded for being the first person in your family to go to university, attending a French high school etc.

As Lauren mentioned work study is a great option.
Often times your schedule is flexible and you work somewhere on campus such that it's easy for you to pop in when you have time in between classes if you wanted.

Thank you comment icon Hi Vanja, Thank you for mentioning the scholarships and bursaries along with the work study programs. I will definitely look into them once I find the college I would like to apply to. Azra
Thank you comment icon Thank you, this was helpful! Alfie

Simeon’s Answer

Finding temporary, part-time work is hit or miss. I'd recommend checking out work-study programs during college to earn money at on-campus jobs during college. You can get study time back if you work in a dorm lobby or a library. You can get lots of free food if you work at the cafeteria. I was able to do both and it was a big boon to both my undergraduate and graduate studies. It helped me connect the dots financially while living in college as well. Plus, you save yourself hours of time commuting to and from campus and don't have to deal with quite the same stress/pressure from having a real job off-campus.
