What High School classes should I take to be in the fashion industry? And what AP classes?
I am a junior in highschool interested in pursuing a career in fashion. I am not sure what career I want, but I want to be prepared for the fashion industry. #fashion-design #apparel-and-fashion #merchandising #fashion-shows #fashion-design #apparel-and-fashion

Hello!
I was a Fashion Merchandising / Business major in college. I took classes in design, but also marketing, accounting and sales. After college I worked as a clothing buyer for a major US retailer, then in the soft toy industry, both of which required not only a background in fashion, but in business too. It may seem strange, but I now work as a business person in a science field, which actually is built on all the experiences I had in fashion and toys! I can't give much advise on AP classes to take now, but I encourage you to add basic business classes to any fashion classes you take...and see where it all leads you! I wish you all the best!

I don't think there are other classes besides the CTE Fashion classes that are offered in your school. You could also try taking some business classes to give you better knowledge and context for whatever company you end up working in. As far as AP classes go, look up which colleges you want to go to and make sure they accept all the AP coursework you're considering. You don't want to waste all that time studying if those passed tests won't be getting you your degree sooner.
Thank you!

I have spent my entire career in the fashion/retail industry, working for department stores, specialty stores and an e-commerce start-up in a number of roles including being a member of the leadership team for two.
There are no specific high school classes I would recommend...I would focus on your overall GPA and getting involved in extracurricular and leadership activities as these will help you get into the college of your choice (perhaps one which offers a strong apparel merchandising program). I would also look to get a part time/summer job working for a retailer to gain some relevant experience.
Good luck!

Hello:
I would recommend any marketing and/or business classes. Be sure to join your school’s DECA or FBLA organizations and if possible, work in the school store.
Good luck 🍀 on your journey:)!
