Hello Christian,

First, congratulations on making it through high school this far!! You should be really proud of yourself.

What I would recommend Is to make a list of things that you do like. For example, for me I chose a major that's very broad. I didn't decide on my major until my sophomore year of college, currently, I'm a communication major. But in college, you will take a lot of introductory courses and you will discover what is your passionate about. I would maybe recommend Business or Sports Administration if that's what you're passionate about?

One very important lesson that I learned is that your “major does not equal career”.

Hopefully, this helps. If you would like feel free to reach out to me!
Edwin.

Hi Christian

It's great that you are thinking ahead to what you what to major in once you get to college. I wouldn't worry if you haven't decided by the time you arrive at your college. You still have lots of time to think about this. One thing to keep in mind is seeking a "marketable" career. What I mean by this is what are the jobs of the future? You don't want to go into a career where there won't be a great deal of jobs. Ideas to look at might include: technology, healthcare, accounting/finance/ business and the sciences. These are areas that continue to grow and where there are many job opportunities.

Talking to people in these fields, taking courses in the above areas as well as researching these careers to learn more about the types of jobs you will find in each area will give you additional info to help you decide if any of these fields are of particular interest.

Once you get to college you will find that there will be a career center.....make good use of it. Also, very often companies will come to college campus's to look for future recruits to their organizations. This too would be a great way to learn about different companies and the types of jobs and careers they offer.

As you explore careers also find out what it takes to get in to a particular field. Will you need more schooling after college...ie...a graduate degree?
These things are important to know.

Best of luck with your studies and at college!

Hi Christian,

When thinking about a major a lot comes to mind. You think about what your interest are and you may have many. We also think about our personality and how that would fit in a future career.

You should start with exploring careers and taking a personality assessment as well. This will give you a starting point to explore careers. This also helps you become aware of things you like and may not like.

visit the following website: https://www.onetonline.org/

Start with the purple box that says: I want to be a.....

Take the assessment and you will see your personality code and possible careers of interest. By the time you are ready to go to college, you will have an idea of a major you may be interested in.

Simeon’s Answer

If you are looking to use your degree in business to do sports business, there are degrees that specialize in sports business, but you could just as easily focus on getting an internship related to sports and focus on getting a normal business degree. A little bit of flexibility in your degree will give you the option to get experience outside of the sports industry and build your resume to where it's strong enough if you don't get in at first. You'll find much more success if you focus on networking well rather than focusing on getting the exactly correct degree, even though you could probably network very well within those more focused sports business degrees if one of them is accessible to you.
