How do I find a career that suits me better?
I'm a student in year 11, & I would like to have a career in the medical field. Right now, I am leaning more towards mid-wife but I want to see what other careers that may interest me.

Honestly, don't be shy about reaching out to local hospitals and clinics to see if they do any volunteering or learning programs that will allow you to speak to the people in the business, and see it in action. I do recommend doing any certifications that you can at your age like CPR, First Aid, etc. that will allow you to get first hand experience and contact with people in the business as well. Below is some information regarding fields of study and career paths that can also help you learn more about what's available that might peak your interest.

Reach out! Ask questions! Don't be afraid to loop others in about your career and ways to enhance your career so that it fits your needs and desires as a person. Just remember that there are a lot of professions in the medical field and it is worthwhile to compile a list of them that you think sound interesting.

As suggested by others, reach out to local hospital maternity ward staff and then expand to other staff at the hospital to see what their perspectives are. Talk to those who are recently new to their jobs and those who have been doing it a while - their perspectives will be enlightening. I was interested in becoming a doctor and volunteered for my local emergency room. It helped me make that important decision for myself. There are a lot of interesting jobs in healthcare, including direct patient interaction and indirect patient interaction. Good luck!

I'd recommend seeing if you can visit a maternity ward and a pediatrics center if you can. See what hospital volunteering you can do. Anything you can do to see the real thing and talk to real nurses will be helpful. Talk to them about their favorite and least favorite things about their jobs. Ask them what sacrifices they had to make to get to where they are. These questions and others will help guide you toward which specialty you'd like to focus on.
