If you define success as a profitable, stable career, you'd be well of to choose a broader skill set that also happens to apply in the fashion industry. Marketing, web design, and computer skills fit this bucket and offer the biggest chance of success. You can also find your way into fashion by building up a strong resume in other careers and then getting recruited for that kind of work in the fashion industry. If you want to get in, you'll probably have to get started networking early as I imagine it's a competitive job market.

Success can be anything. It depends on your view of what success is. Someone who works at Gap as a designer or manager or program manager who leads the production and design can be considered successful.
