Kevin’s Answer

It will depend on your skillset, but, generally speaking, game design is a difficult field to operate in because of the advanced math required for many aspects of it. The specifics will depend on the section of game design you'd like to focus on though. Game design as a profession often includes a few different fields: artificial intelligence, computer graphics, navigation (e.g. determining the quickest path on the minimap for the player to go from point A to point B). For many individuals, the math involved in this profession can be very challenging. Other areas of the profession though will require a very different skill set, such as level design, which relies more on architectural knowledge and digital sculpting skills. This has become easier than it used to be with the invention of the iPad Pro and other tools replacing older tools like the Wacom Bamboo tablets.

At the end of the day, I would recommend participating in a game jam or other hackathon sponsored by a university, local company, or that you locate online. These do a good job of exposing you to the end-to-end process of creating a game with a much smaller investment than a full-featured game. In addition, if there are specific games that interest you, I would recommend creating a game modification. Successful game modders (for games with vibrant modding communities) often get noticed by developers of the games. The best way to determine if you enjoy game design is to try your hand at it.

Kevin recommends the following next steps:

Participate in a game jam
Create a video game modification

I know few kids including my son who wanted to pursue the game designing field. So they pursued Computer Science/Computer Engineering Field.
Once they finished their undergraduate, they learned what they originally planned for and what the current opportunities are vast. Hence, they did not pursue game designing which was a starting point but wound up working for well-known companies writing software for them along with six figures salary, signing bonus, and stock options.

You may decide to pursue this field and there are few companies like EA and many others but available companies are limited vs. what is available for software engineering.

This is a real example of the people who were in your boat before they decided to pursue Computer Sc/Eng.
In Life, nothing is easy including Game Design or any undertaking you may take.
