I'm not a fashion designer, but I am an artist that have had personal encounters with practicing fashion designers. Try understanding yourself better and listening to yourself. Try to understand your style too and do not try to be like any other person. Create what portrays who you are and try getting the attention of people who are interested in your type of designs. Just be consistent and trust the process.

Hi Loren:
Good day!
I'm not a fashion designer, as well, but I have two answers for you.
First of all, I had wanted to take up fine arts back in college, but I ended up in communication arts instead. Nonetheless, the drive to learn more and develop my "aesthetic sense" had always been there. As thus, to this day, I continue to do my research:
- I attend exhibits that interest me to follow and update myself with TRENDS. You always have to remain updated. Going to such events will also enable you to meet like-minded people like yourself! Ask them questions, if you can. Asking is also another form of research, by the way. And who knows? By going to such events, you can end up meeting new friends who may be your business partners in the future!
- Continually read books, magazines, and journals that align with your interest.
- Similarly, watch videos that align with your interest.
- Join FB groups who may have the same interests in fashion design as you do! There are now so many options to reach out to people online and across the world! Do a little research (that word again) and spend some time connecting with others. In fashion, and in other industries, having a network you can reach out to now and in the future is important!
I said I have two answers to your question. Here's the second one. My maternal grandmother had great fashion sense! She made clothes for my mom and her sisters when they were little and all the way till college. My grandmother never went to fashion school, but her clothes were amazing! How did she become good at her craft? She observed people and how they dressed. She was always on the lookout for good color combinations, fabrics, notions, etc.
Developing our expertise takes time, Loren. But it is not impossible. Enjoy the process of learning and discovering what works and does not work for you. Any small progress you make is still progress!
Good luck!

Hello,
I've been fashion designing for 10 years. You can develop yourself by studying some of the great fashion designers like Yves Saint Laurent, Valentino, Balenciaga just to name a few. Find out what made them unique. How did they approach their work? What kind of techniques did they use? What inspired them? This will inspire you also.
I also like to go to different kinds of art exhibits not just fashion. I would also say develop an eye for color. What colors work best on different skin tones. Get familiar with different fabric types and how they are best used. Be experimental and practice, practice, practice. Be hands on!
