How would playing soccer for a NCAA Division 1 school and majoring in engineering work out?

I'm a Lafayette student of the class of 2018. I'm majoring in Mechanical Engineering and minoring in Civil Engineering. #engineering #sports #soccer #ncaa

I have friends who have done engineering and a college sport. It's doable, but can be very challenging, as with any major. The important thing is to communicate. Talk to your coaches about practice schedules before the season starts. Maybe they can move a practice earlier or later if you have a required class that conflicts. Talk to other athletes who are engineers if you know any; if not, ask some older teammates for recommendation. Talk to the engineering department - ask them if they have other athletes in the program and for their advice balancing it. Once you are enrolled in courses (regardless of major), always talk to your professors about missing class in advance, and see what you can do to avoid missing class or at least make it less of an issue for the professor (i.e., handing in work early, going to a different time slot of the same course that week to learn the material, etc).

It would be a challenge but if you are up front and honest with your coaches and professors at the start of the season, you should be able to succeed in both. You will want to take advantage of study halls, if available, with your team members and even learn which professors are more flexible when it comes to the schedules of student athletes. Be prepared to study on the bus to and from games and look for study partners on your team.
