One of the first things you may want to start with is looking at resume examples online. There are certain things you are expected to put on a resume. After you do that, there are things you can be creative about. For example, you are expected to put your name, an email, a contact phone even, your current education, and any other experience you may have. (Keep in mind, if you have no experience, this is fine too. Just write any projects, community activities, school activities, course related exercises that are relevant to the job you are applying to).

Then the creative part comes in where you are trying to make sure that your resume is one of a kind. It is suggested that writing about your hobbies like running, D&D, public speaking, singing, cleaning, etc. can show an employer the type of person you are. Your hobbies reflect the type of a person you are. If your hobby is cleaning, it shows that you are probably someone who is organized and isn't afraid to get their hands dirty. If your hobby is public speaking, your employer learns that you are someone who isn't afraid to talk in front of a crowd and express your feelings and opinions (which is an important trait in the workforce).

If you are volunteering somewhere, you should always put that on the resume. Any affiliations with any organizations (Lions club for community service or CareerVillage for career advice) should also be shown.

Most of all, your resume should be tailored for the job. Try putting the words that show up on the job listing. If a computer is sorting through the resume, it will search for those words and if your resume doesn't have any of the words (say the job description says that one must know Microsoft Excel and you mention nothing about Excel even if you know Excel) then the computer will skip over your resume. So always tailor your resume for the job you are applying to.

If you have access to a guidance counselor or someone in the career services department at school, you can bring them your draft and they should be able to assist you. As mentioned above, you will want to tailor it to the job but you also want to make sure to use dynamic verbs and adjectives to outline your accomplishments, responsibilities, and awards. Looking online is a great way to start and lots of sites like the Daily Muse often templates, language suggestions, and phrases to help get you started.
Most of all you want to make sure it is error free. Have several people edit your resume before you sent it out as a sloppy resume may be pushed aside before it is thoroughly reviewed.

Jonas L.’s Answer

A good resume should highlight a person's education, skills, experience, and accomplishments. You should probably use a functional resume. This style of resume allows employers to see what you can do (skills), and not just a narrative of what you have done (experiences).

Elaine’s Answer

A really good resume does not just list your personal accomplishments, but adds the effect that accomplishment had on the business. For example, you rolled out a new tool or process, and it decreased errors or increased sales by x%.
