Elliot’s Answer

It really depends on you, your instructor and money flow. If you have the money and the time, you can "fly" through your certificates and ratings fairly quick. Its possible to get private, instrument, commercial, multi in a year. But that is working full time at it almost everyday for hours a day. 250-300 hours of flight training and proably triple that hours for ground training. Although you can study the ground stuff a bunch on your own. Your local flight school could help you better put a plan together.

Steve’s Answer

It all depends on not only what type of pilot you want to be, but how concentrated your training is. You can become a private pilot in 6 months or less. To become a military pilot, the initial training is one year, followed by several more months to years to specialize in a specific aircraft or mission. To be an airline pilot, it takes years to acquire the hours and experience necessary to be competitive as a potential pilot for a major airline.
