if you don't have a machine yet, you should look into buying a used one that is in good condition. Your local Sew and Vac can help you out there. Ask for hand me down fabric, most sewists have A TON that they don't need anymore.

In terms of classes, there are a TON of paid and free tutorials that will help you learn how to sew. Youtube and craftsy are great and super useful. There are some basic techniques that will be useful to you including precision seam allowance, tension, etc. and these differ by type of fabric (cotton, jersey, brocade, etc.)

Start with simple patterns and as you get more confident, grow into what you are looking for. I would start inundating people in your life with tons of free gifts while you practice. Once you master the basics, you can start working on your own designs. Good luck!

Hi Shaun, You can find pretty much all the advice and help you need on You Tube, I am a keen sewer but do not have all the necessary skills and so will often look for a video to explain what I need to do. You could also reach out to any local groups where you could go along and watch others using their machines. Good luck

Jennifer’s Answer

Mastering the use of a sewing machine is essential for fashion design and garment creation. The process involves setting up the machine on a stable surface, threading the needle, winding and inserting the bobbin, and selecting the desired stitch type. Starting with the presser foot down, fabric is guided under it while the foot pedal is pressed to begin sewing, using backstitching to secure the stitches. After sewing, threads are trimmed, and the fabric is removed. While practice is key to becoming proficient, instructional videos and tutorials can provide additional guidance on threading, fabric types, and troubleshooting. With dedication, you'll soon be comfortable with your sewing machine, ready to bring your designs to life.

Jennifer recommends the following next steps:

Crafting a Business Plan: While not mandatory, a business plan can provide a roadmap for your brand’s growth and financial projections. Developing a Unique Brand Philosophy: Establishing a design philosophy or values can help define your brand identity.
Designing Your First Collection: Starting with a small collection can test the waters before expanding.
Preparing for Manufacturing: Deciding whether to produce in-house or outsource is a strategic choice.
Setting Price Points: Pricing your products appropriately is crucial for profitability.
Developing a Marketing Strategy: A strong marketing strategy can help you reach your target audience and build brand awareness.
