Usually, the term computer scientist means a researcher in the field of computer science. If what you mean is to do research in computer science, then you will need to get a Ph.D. degree in computer science. This is not easy and will require a lot of hard work.
On the other hand, if you want to study computer science and wants to become a software engineer, then it's a lot easier. You can start learning how to program first, there are a lot of resources on the internet, including coursera, udemy, edux etc. Start from the basics. You should master the basic algorithms and data structure. There is also a lot of different focus areas for computer science in general, for example, web programming, network programming, etc. You can explore a bit and see which area you like the most. You don't have to study computer science in college, but you should definitely choose a STEM field, like Math, Science and Engineering.

The most important is to try it out. There are a lot of resources on the internet, like Coursera, which are either free or low cost. Try to take one class and see if you like it. Many people choose computer science because of the high salary. Don't do that since you don't want to do something you hate. Best of luck.
