Hi Nate,

If you're interested in Industrial design thats also an area where you can expand on your manufacturing skills. The combination of the two can help you in the future. It helps to know how to design product that is human-centered and its even better if you know how to manufacture it as well because it has real life implications.

I heard University of Cincinnati's Industrial Design program is a really strong program that sets you up to do internships as part of your semester of learning. So one semester you had classes in school doing projects and one semester you intern somewhere. Its a really great opportunity to get real career experience.

I would consider schools that focus on MFG degrees, 1st, then you would have more opportunities to take classes specific to this field. We have hired grads from various schools into the Manufacturing Operations, but some schools have done great work with specific fields within the MFG environment!
Purdue University has a really good school for Manufacturing, like Michigan State University for Supply Chain, when the graduates come to work at Dell - they have both a solid education and experience, which allows them to make an immediate impact to the company. Unfortunately, Dell moved most of it Manufacturing off-shore, but we still do have a High-End Storage facility in Boston area that is under Dell MFG! ... Dell EMC.
Manufacturing fields that produce something, like a "widget" as example, includes all kind of different task and processes. Metrics, like Analytics, are something that is a growing field and used throughout all MFG steps. Robotics should be something that is also considered when looking at automation and efficiencies within a MFG operations. When managing people within the Manufacturing world, then Leadership and Human Resources are fields of study, which some people start out within the military to learn about different aspects of both!

If wanting more info, may ask exactly what ideas or thoughts you are interested in being a manufacture:
do you want to be an Engineer (Michigan) and design things on a computer that build a "widget" or assembly Operations for process flows.
good luck, Skip
