Excellent communication skills, planning and organizing , problem-solving skills and the ability to keep calm in challenging situations.
The only way to become a police detective is to work as a police officer, pass a test, and earn promotion to detective through the department. If you want to pursue a career as a detective without going through the police academy and working as an officer first, you can become a private investigator.

Mira,
A four year degree or higher is going to improve your chances. However, depending on the police department and their needs the requirements could be less. A police department might chose detectives from existing police officers. Many require police officers to serve several years before becoming eligible for detective positions. Again, supply and demand!
Hope this helps!
