William’s Answer

I was 16 and just got my drivers license. I had to get a car and pay for gas to take my girlfriend out. So I got a job laboring for a brick layer doing the foundations of new homes. The work was physical digging footers, pouring the cement, then keeping the block layer supplied with mortar and block. He would build his corners first and shoot the height of the block with a transit. This created the grade for the house and its foundation, for level and plumb block walls. The walls had to be waterproofed with a coating of Ironight or tar with visqueen ( 6mil thick plastic) over it to prevent water from penetrating the block and going into the basement. A drain tile was installed along the bottom for run off water drainage.( gutters, ect.) Learning the processes of building a strong foundation, in everything, will make a house stand for hundreds of years developed into a passion. Creating and building something that is going to outlast you has something to say about yourself.

William recommends the following next steps:

Getting a MBA in construction engineering could open opportunities in the trades.
Learning about different trades you might specialize in.
Taking something that your good at and improving methods.
Using some creative thinking to develop budget crunching ideas.
