Can I ask someone who isn't my teacher for a recommendation?

I'm currently interning within a research program. Just curious if I can ask the professor who accepted me for a college recommendation, or if they're typically only written by one's teachers. #college #teaching #teacher #professor #college-bound #recommendation

Ken’s Answer

Hi Abbie!

A reference can be written by anyone who is familiar with you and can make positive comments regarding traits that you have that relate to the position to which you are applying - no matter how general they might be. I am attaching two sites that I think are very helpful.

One key thing to remember is to ask whomever you choose to be a reference and explain to them what you are applying for and will be using the reference for so that they can make relevant comments regarding your qualifications for the position.

David’s Answer

Hi Abbie!

Ken is definitely right; you can get letters of recommendation from people who know you well through work, research, or other extracurricular activities. Letters of rec always come in handy when applying for jobs/internships!

However, with specific regard to the college application process, most schools require two letters of recommendation (both from teachers). Some schools and universities even suggest that you only ask teachers from your junior year of high school for letters of rec, as they believe that teachers from your most recent year of high school (since you're applying to college as a senior) most likely know your most recent self. Many schools do let you submit an additional letter of recommendation from a coach/mentor/friend, but getting two letters of rec from teachers is a must with college admissions these days.

I hope this helped! Feel free to let me know if you have any follow up questions!

Cheers,
David Ohta
