Hi there Katie! It looks like you asked this question in August of 2016? WOW! Sorry no one has answered, but I'll give it a whirl. First and foremost: you've got to have a good song. If you play an instrument and sing, great, but that's not a requirement these days. I believe lyrics are the key to getting a connection to the listener which will have the biggest draw. As far as producing the song goes, I've trained and worked for a few years, but here are a few basic tips. Start with the simplest accompaniment, like just a guitar and vocals, and get a "scratch track" down. Use the click track in your recording software to record the song at the proper tempo. After that, then go back and start adding additional tracks, such as drums, bass, additional guitars, keyboards, and also do formal recordings of the vocals. When you have enough tracks recorded, "mute" the scratch track of the song and listen to what you have. When you record, DO NOT worry about getting the part you're playing recorded perfectly. You can do 10-15 takes of a part and edit together a version that sounds perfect. I hope this helps! It can be a rewarding and enjoyable pursuit. I wish you the best of luck on your recording journeys!
