Hi,

This is a very good question. High school friendship is different from University friends, because you will get to learn a lot of things in college.

  1. The best way to make friendship is choose the right friends, do not judge friends in the first meeting itself

  2. Get to know how they are and then you can move closely with them

  3. In college you will have many social, educational and cultural activities along with regular studies, choose friends whom you can move well.

  4. Always have a happy look and greet them with smile.

  5. Initially you may feel shy but try to overcome it slowly

  6. Try to indulge in more group activities and you can meet more people

At the end of summer, hordes of new freshmen will enter college campuses for the first time. It is a time of new experiences — new dorms, new classes and new friends.

With that in mind, here are 10 simple tips to make friends at college:

  1. Be yourself.

No matter which college you go to, there will be people who share your interests and personality. It is important that you let your personality shine through so that your friends will be drawn to who you are as a person.

  1. Use the dorm to your advantage.

Dorms are filled with other college freshmen going through similar experiences, eager to make friends. Many dorms have common rooms, where events are organized simply to help freshmen meet other freshmen.

  1. Be interesting.

In order to stick out in the crowd, it helps to have something unique — be it a personality trait or a hobby. Whether it’s your propensity for strategy games or affinity for Rocky Horror Picture Show reenactments, talking about those unique traits will ensure that people remember who you are.

  1. Do extracurriculars.

If there is a club based on something you like, join it! Doing something you love with others creates a special bond and something to talk about.

  1. Try to know a little about everything.

It is impossible to predict what people you’ll meet or what conversations you’ll have. Knowing about the things people talk about can prepare you for any introduction. For instance, you may not know the MVP of the Philadelphia Eagles, but it may help to know what football is.

  1. Find common ground.

Similar experiences, shared hobbies and other mutual interests can bring people together and make conversations much more interesting.

  1. Eat meals with people.

Throughout history — from gatherings of agricultural communities to the Tomatina in Spain — people have bonded over food.

College is no different; a meal is a great way to get closer to a new friend or chat with an old one.

  1. Ask the usual questions.

It may seem contrived, but it’s a good idea to have some basic small-talk questions ready for use at all times.

Examples include, but are not limited to: “Where are you from?” “Did you do pre-orientation?” “What classes are you taking?”

  1. Invite people to do normally solitary activities.

Perhaps you work out or meditate every day. Well, why not invite a friend to share in the fun?

  1. Be nice.

While fawning or being a people pleaser may be a step too far, it is important to care about your friends.

They will notice your attitude, and will be more likely to mirror it back toward you.

hello there
hi there
you do have a really good question going into college, cause everyone will look for a good pack to hang around with.
The best way to make friends is to have a smile on your face. when you see a person looking at you smile at him and i'm sure he will smile back at you. By doing so for a few times, the next time you would have the feeling that i know him which will help you to initiate a talk with him and by doing that you can make him your friend .
The other best way if to be selfless person. By that it removes the small ego that you have within yourself that would keep you away from talking to a person for the first time.
The best way to make friends is by taking a small thing to college everyday you go which is a smile.
because a smile on the face makes the heart smile.
Beware the only thing that stops you from making a friend is you, not him.
Smile and make others smile coz life is just too small to frown and to have ego.
all the best buddy.

Hi,
Good question, I think you will find that college is very different than high school and you will have more opportunities to make friends in class/group projects, by joining campus organizations, studying at the library- I am kinda old, not sure if that is still something students do :) and through campus activities.
Good luck in college! :)

Blake’s Answer

Hey Anina,

The best thing that you can do is to get involved on campus! That could be the student government association, sports, etc.

Thanks,
Blake
