I'm not sure who is the consumer: the animal's care-giver who does the shopping or the animal who's doing the consumption of the product!
As a dog owner, I seek food and treats that (a) provide well-balanced nutrition, (b) from a trusted supply chain (not something that may contaminated or inaccurate in what it reports to be), (c) at a reasonable price point, (d) readily available (not so special and rare that I cannot find it in shops or get it delivered reliability), and (e) which will be be around for a while (no fly-by-night companies) because changing a dog's diet properly can take weeks. I run my food by my veterinarian to get profession opinion and I monitor dog food recalls.
I believe my dog just wants lots of flavor. And to stay alive.
