Hi Anina,
Great question.
- During my tertiary studies (Information Tech) I worked as a waiter in a restaurant, this taught me great customer skills and dealing with deadlines.
- Also during my tertiary studies I volunteered as a student assistant for other students doing basic computer lit.
- First formal was as a tech support engineer for a backup and recovery software application called Backup Exec. I learnt the most from having a technical mentor.
- Then after 4 years moved into a technical pre sales role - working with a sales team advising customers. Using both my technical skills and customer skills acquired previously
- Then after 4 years moved into my first team lead role - helping and growing other members of the team
- Then after 4 Years moved into a technical leadership role
- Then moved into a sales leadership role
The key is to always have a longer term plan than you are working towards. This keeps you focused and motivated during good and bad times
