What is the difference between a marketing and ad agency?
I'm wondering how they are differentiated. Also, are there some that perform both marketing and ad wrap-around? What is most common? Thank you! #marketing #advertising #ad-agency #marketing-agency #media #media-production #social-media

Hello Rebecca,
Great to see your interest in this topic.
In its concept, Marketing is more broader then advertising, which is more of a component.
Marketing agencies work on all aspects of marketing, imagine a company is just starting off with a new product or service in the market. They would need to put their product or service out there and visible for potential buyers to know it exists, and eventually identify a need in that product.
This company could work with a marketing agency to plan go to market strategies, communication, placement, promotion and pricing plan, so to nurture an ongoing lead generation with the companies product or service (marketing's main role is to generate leads that are valuable to convert as sales).
Now imagine, this company, is already mature and wants to promote a new specific feature, product, service, this when they can work with an advertising agency to plan initiatives for that specific goal, boosting severely the product's visibility, thought different channels, like TV, buses, outdoors, mupis, etc., so here you see that advertising is a valuable component of the promotion side of marketing, while marketing it self, is a broader world.
I hope this example is helpful for you ;)

Hi Rebecca, I've spent most of my career on the agency side and 2 years ago went client side so I think I have a good perspective on the two. On the agency side, you have the opportunity to work with many different clients and brands to solve their marketing challenges and needs. It's fast pace, exciting and on any given day/week/month you get to work with a variety of opportunities including pitching new business. On the client side, you're focused on driving the marketing needs for one specific company/brand/project and you own that assignment. Ultimately, you're in charge and part of that responsibility is directing, motivating and inspiring your agencies to do their best work. Both are amazing, but very different.

Marketing and Ad Agencies can be one in the same. Full-Service Advertising Agencies are often provide strategy, creative and production expertise, which cover the broader aspects of marketing. There are also more specialized agencies that provide deep expertise in areas like brand design or customer experience or digital innovation or media planning and buying. Then, there are management consultancies such as Bain, McKinsey and BCG that provide marketing consultancy on strategic or organizational change.
Thoughtful and insightful.

What is Marketing?
Having spent significant years in sales in my professional life, most companies have a marketing department to assist the sales team to promote the products.
For instance: I worked in the software industry where the marketing was responsible for promoting the products, create datasheets w/ the help from the engineering, arrange webinars, and decide where to promote the products: website, trade shows, and arrange speaking engagements.
What is Ad-Agency?
Most major companies (Soft drink companies, Cereal Companies, etc) use an Ad Agency to help them promote their products. This is a staff of people who assist and create advt, commercials and strategize what products to promote when to give incentives to create sales. It is more than marketing, it is a collection of industry knowledge, creativity, and art to lure attention and create interest.

Advertising Agencies are outside companies that are hired to work with a brand to market their products or services. Marketing agency is generally more broader and can have more of a sales type aspect.

As with Marketing you are employing the 4 Ps - Product, Place, Promotion and Price. These are the key elements that you will influence as you perform "Marketing.
An Ad Agency can help you with the strategic and tactical elements surrounding the Advertising and Positioning aspect of Marketing a product or service, with a special expertise and focus on Radio, TV, Out of Home (Outdoor billboard as example), Direct Mail and so forth. There is a cost of course for the Ad Agency services fees plus actual cost to buy the Advertising on your behalf.
Hope this helps! Good luck with your Marketing efforts.

Advertising Agencies are typically an outside company that is hired to work with a brand on how to bring the product or service to life in a creative way for the intended audience. The brand company often has a marketing department that informs about the products, pricing, audiences and more. Basically, marketing provides all the X's and O's for what needs to be advertised and the agency brings it to life in creative and media.
Hi Michael, thanks! Can you please clarify what you mean by "X's and O's"?
Rebecca
Hi Rebecca....sorry about that. I mean they provide the details and specifications about potential products and services, who they may be intended for, how they may be used, pricing, promotions and more. The ad agency usually distills this information in a creative or communications strategy that is then brought to life with creative ideas. Hope that helps clarify. This is really just a distinction at the most basic level between marketing and ad agencies.

Thank you so much! Super helpful - appreciate it!
